Eswatini Competition Commission

On 05 March 2026, the Eswatini Competition Commission (ESCC) hosted a consumer protection workshop at the Commission’s offices for students from Motshane High School and Ezulwini Community High School to educate them about their rights and responsibilities as consumers. Learners were introduced to key consumer rights, common unfair business practices and the role of the Commission in protecting consumers and promoting fairness in the marketplace.

During the sessions, students were guided on how to recognize when their consumer rights have been violated and the steps they can take to seek assistance. Officials from the Commission also explained the available redress mechanisms, including how consumers can lodge complaints and how the Commission can intervene to resolve disputes between businesses and consumers.

Speaking during the workshop, Dr Thobisa Simelane emphasized the importance of consumer awareness among young people. “It is important for young people to understand their rights as consumers as they make a significant number of purchasing decisions in the market and make up a large portion of the population. When they are informed about their rights and responsibilities, they are better equipped to make reasonable purchasing decisions and protect themselves from unfair business practices.” he said.

Educating young people about consumer protection is essential in building a generation of informed and responsible consumers in today’s dynamic and digital marketplace. As young consumers begin to make independent purchasing decisions, whether online or in physical stores, it is important that they understand how the market operates and how they can protect themselves from unfair business practices.
By empowering the youth, the Commission is fostering a generation of informed and confident consumers who can actively participate in ensuring economic growth through fair competition.

Through initiatives like this workshop, Eswatini Competition Commission continues to strengthen public awareness and reaffirm its commitment to promoting fair markets, protecting consumers and ensuring sustainable economic growth in Eswatini.
